From “La-di-da-di” To “La-di-dollars”: A Conversation with Slick Rick

Sign up or log in to save this to your schedule, view media, leave feedback and see who's attending!

As the third artist signed to legendary label Def Jam Recordings, GRAMMY-nominated artist and icon Slick Rick became the most successful British-American rapper when his wildly infectious debut album, The Great Adventures of Slick Rick, debuted 30 years ago. Not only beloved for his cadence and flow, Rick has transcended his role as an artist and expanded his own personal brand. Building upon his iconic style, for example, he has teamed up to develop a line of sunglasses with ill.i Optics, a limited-edition white tee featuring graphics of Rick’s iconic gold and diamond chains with custom-apparel platform Teespring, a limited-release women’s tank top sporting the lyrics to “La-di-da-di” with Lyric Culture, and most recently, customized socks for Odd Sox’s music collection.

In an interview with Rap Coalition’s Wendy Day, for whom Rick provided the audio for the audiobook version of her book How To Get A Record Deal: The Knowledge To Succeed, Slick Rick will discuss how he expanded his personal brand from artist to entrepreneur. As part of this year’s Financial Literacy Summit, this session will expand on the summit’s mission to help artists smartly manage their income by discussing how they can build their brand into a business to create multiple revenue streams.

This session is part of our Music and Money: Financial Literacy Summit, powered by Lyric Financial
Following a successful debut in 2018, our Financial Literacy Summit is the perfect companion program for attendees asking, “I know how to MAKE money in the music business, but what do I do once I’ve EARNED it?” The program will unite artists, managers, agents, CPAs, lawyers and more for well-rounded discussions on how to secure your financial future. This year’s Summit will specifically cover how to build financial footing when cash flow is in flux, how to be the “CEO” of your business as an indie songwriter, and the ins-and-outs of alternative financing.
